Guide to Google penalties recognition and removal 2012

1) Penalty recognition and removal:

A) Did you got some private blog network backlinks?

If you see a penalty some time after you got some private blog network post backlinks - even some long months later - it could meant that blog network got de-indexed (check your reports and forums for any comments about de-indexing networks).

Penalty recognition:

- sudden drop in rankings without any reason (sometimes it could be 3-5 spots, sometimes 100-200 spots)
- un-explained dancing (no backlinking/onsite optimization done in last 2 weeks)

Solution:

If you see only dancing/small drop in rankings then it means your backlink diversity is low. Go and grab some different types of backlinks - mix of Manual Bookmarks (a lot of them from different providers) and unique article submission to article directories will help to regain your position - even stronger than before.

B) Did you pinged your website/got some Whois posted to it?

You can notice huge dancing (even tens of positions back and forward) or sudden drop way below top100.

Penalty recognition:

- sudden drop in rankings or heavy dancing
- drop in just few keywords or group of related keywords

The main causes could be two:

B1) your onsite optimization is really poor
B2) you have nasty backlinking (some really poor backlinks/spam/porn links)

To determine which one is right - simply check what backlinks Google sees by checking Alexa backlink checker and Google search engine. If Alexa is not showing anything of ppor quality (spammed websites where you link is located) then search for your website as - domain.com (without quotes and without www or http://). If you can see any spammy links (use your common sense to determine) within first 5 pages - then go ahead with B2 solution. If not - use B1 solution.

Solution:

B1) Check your inner linking (for any dead ones), correct 301's, proper site map, proper coding of website (no serious errors). I would suggest getting some webmaster to check your coding (he do not need access to your hosting - he should be able to work by reading your sites code with his browser) or using IBP (expensive but extensive) or SEOmoz (less expensive but really user friendly) - I didn't tested other options so just check reviews on SEO non-affiliate forums/blogs/review sites.
After you are done hit your site with ping services (pingomatic, feed burner) and whois sites (hit it with like 1000-10.000 sites to get your site noticed by crawlers to re-check it).

B2) Build some high authority backlinks - perfectly 2-3 types of links.
I would suggest high PR backlinks at first (any high PR backlinks will do really). Once you have some good number of them get them indexed at once (build SB links to them or run them by one of the indexing/crawling programs like Linklicious/Backlinks Indexer/Lindexed etc.)
[For example - build some High PR (PR4+) forum profiles, High PR blog posts and High PR Web 2.0 properties]

C) Did you created a lot of backlinks lately?

You have created a lot of backlinks recently and your site is jumping around or lost a lot of rankings.

Penalty recognition:

- heavy dancing, moving up and down (from top position to out of top100 and backwards)
- most of the keywords changed position right after backlinking (possibly for worst)
- your website lost all rankings (but you can still see it in Google as top3 when you search for your own domain name without spaces etc.)

Solution:

C1) You are not in top3 results when you search for domain.com (where domain = your domain name, .com = your extension - do not use www/http when searching for it in Google)

It means your website got serious penalty from Google - possibly soft one.
DO NOT ask for reconsideration within Webmaster Tool in Google.

Follow those steps:
- remove Google Analitycs from your site
- close your Google Webmaster Tools account (cancel it)
- log out from Gmail/Youtube (from now on always log out from them before accessing Google search results or your site)
- opt out/log out from any Google owned business that could lead to YOU or to your website

Perform full onsite optimization - (Check step B1) but do not do Whois linking.
Build quality backlinks to your site - Facebook, Twitter and whole group of Reputation Management business sites (Linkedin/Merchant Circle/YouTube/MySpace...). Do it manually or get a guy that can do this for you.
Get some social backlinks (High PR Manual Bookmarks or Re-Tweets with your link in it).
Get all links crawled (use Pingomatic or more advanced crawling service)
After all this - wait for ~5 days and then submit your site to good list of Whois websites (minimum 1.000).

C2) You are on position 2-3 when you search for your domain name.

Build more diverse backlinks - create "Raw backlinks" (no anchor links) to your main page. You can use for this AMR - get some quality article from Ezine, do not spin it and submit it to article directories. As a link use your homepage url (not inner pages, just homepage).

C3) You are on position 1 when you search for your domain name.

This is just a dance. You can get few of crawling services (Pingomatic etc) and submit your site to them to speed up process of ranking selection.
DO NOT submit your site to Whois sites at the beginning of dance as this can mislead you with further investigation on whats the problem.

D) Did you maintained status Quo for last 2 months?

You have done nothing in last 2 months but all suddenly all your keywords started to falling in rankings.

Penalty recognition:

- sudden drop in rankings without doing anything to the site by you
- complete lost of rankings by all the keywords

Solution:

D1) Your keyword is easy/medium competition

You lack link building - keep building backlinks on weekly or even daily basis. Try to diversify backlinks and fetch some high quality manual ones (Linkedin/Merchant Circle/YouTube/MySpace/Tumblr/Tweeter/Ezine...)
You need to re-build your whole SEO campaign so create a plan of backlinking and start getting them in proper quantities - use your common sense on how many of them. Regular site will use 3 different backlinks provider/sources a month (for example - Manual Bookmarking, Manual Web 2.0 and Scrapebox blast with 10K links - change strategy/providers each month).

D2) Your keyword is in high competitive niche

You need to check your backlinks.
Go to Alexa.com and Google.com and search for your backlinks.
When in Google.com search for domain.com (without quotes, where domain.com is your domain name).
Go through first 10 pages (if there is as much as that) and look for backlinks you do not recognize.

D2-A) You found backlinks that you do not recognize (made by your competitor) - you need to make them weaker or stronger:

D2-A1) Make them stronger - build backlinks to those bad links (do not do it if the anchors are nasty ones like - "Porn", "Fuck", "Cocaine" etc or there is more than 1.000 outgoing links from the page). Get some proper Scrapebox blasts to those links in order to create authority in them. Around 100-500 backlinks per bad link is enough. Get all the backlinks created to badlinks crawled (use Linklicious/Lindexed/BacklinksIndexer).

D2-A2) Make them weaker - to do so you need to make your website authority one. Create high authority backlinks to your website comming from popular social sites + Wikipedia (if you can - possibly as a source link or in-article anchor) + Wiki sites (there is many service providers offering such a Wiki submission). Build few hundreds of high PR backlinks to your site without anchor ("Raw Link"). Get all the backlinks crawled using popular pinging/indexing services.
If none happened - submit your site to Whois database after 2 weeks of creating major backlinks.
Keep building backlinks constantly and take care of diversity so this wont happen again.

2) Avoiding Penalty and Google reviews:

A) Onsite Optimization
B) Offsite SEO
C) Overall Quality Score

A) Onsite Optimization

You are required to keep a very good onsite optimization.
You need to prevent having serious coding loops or errors as Google will detect it easily. Any dead links (within a site or going to other sites) can affect your rankings and cause problems.
List of things to look at:

- Check your websites code for any serious errors. Your code should be W3C validated: http://validator.w3.org/
- Check for dead links - Google hates them: http://www.brokenlinkcheck.com
- Interlink your inner pages to main page (Inner Page linking to main page with one of your main Anchor) or other way around (main page linking through footer with Anchors to most valued inner pages - not too many though)
- No excessive advertising - 2 ad blocks are enough, 3 is a lot, 4+ can affect your rankings
- No linking out to Scam/Spam/Illegal sites - one link to Scam e-commerce shop can drain out your authority
- Proper content quantity/quality for crawlers to index - 300 words article is not enough to fill whole website. Every site, even MNS should have more than 1 page and more than 300 words article
- DO NOT post spinned content on your website - Google will index copied content as long as it is quality and related. Spinned content can get you de-indexed or penalized
- You do not need to link to authority sites - by doing so you will pass some juice on them but also you will get more Google trust. Evaluate which option is best for you.

B) Offsite SEO

To impress Google you need proper diversification and constant backlinking.

- Create different types of backlinks. There is no "Miracle Backlink". You cant dominate results with just one backlink type and hope for Status Quo. You need to diversify your campaign so Google wont see any spam attempts. Even if you are #1 keep building diverse backlinks (if #1 was achieved by blog posts from
private network - build some quality Web 2.0 and .Edu links for diversity and security).
- Keep constant backlink flow. You cannot create 100K Scrapebox backlinks at once and expect best. Keep building backlinks daily, weekly or even monthly to maintain your good authority and trust within Google.
a) Monthly backlinking example - buy automatic bookmarking, 10K Scrapebox blog comments and wiki links in one month - then in next one create new "campaign"
b) Weekly backlinking example - create 1-2 different backlink types like Private Blog Network submission and Forum Profiles first week, .Edu backlinks and Linkpushing other week.
c) Daily backlinking example - build daily amount of backlinks like blog comments, forum profiles bookmarks and manual high PR backlinks
- Mix quality with quantity - Scrapebox or Xrumer links are good as long as you will mix them with high authority (or high PR) backlinks. Do not worry about getting 10K Scrapebox links - but add some extra high PR Bookmarks or Articles same week you done them for fast and secure results.
- Get high authority backlinks indexed using indexing/crawling systems - any high authority (or high PR) backlink can be artificially forced to cue for crawling by Google without any negative penalty.

C) Overall Quality Score

Look at your website as manual reviewer will do it.
He have less than a minute to evaluate your website and he will look for following:
- code/keyword report
- relevance of content to keyword
- ad spam/affiliate spam attempts
- content lockers (do not use content locker if 100% of your traffic is from Google unless you are experienced in what you do)
- misleading information/links

Black Hats: Beware perhpas it will kill you

Appropriate natural (unpaid) SEO is a reliable method to get visibility through search engine point of view... But, take note the keyword “proper.” unluckily some unscrupulous service providers do not take heed of proper SEO techniques.

They use techniques that abuse search engine algorithms to essentially “cheat” their technique to the top. Such methods are called black hats, and they are the bane of search engines. Websites caught using black hat techniques are penalized or even banned by search engines.
If you want your website to be on top of search engine result page (SERP), ban these shady black hats when optimizing your website.

* Unrelated keywords
To get high rankings for every keyword, some people include lots of keywords or phrases in their text even if they are not related or relevant to the site’s content. Black hatters usually misuse and abuse top keywords after determining these words’ relevancy by using certain online tools.

* Keyword stuffing
This involves repeating keywords to such an extent that the content becomes nonsensical. “Tents for camping outdoors tents camping tents” is a perfect example. A properly optimized sentence would be. “Our tents are made of high-quality materials that can withstand harsh outdoor conditions when camping.”

* Hidden or Tiny Text
This annoying black hat technique defies the rules of placing reliable content on web pages. Do not make the test so small that they are unreadable. You should also avoid hiding the text such as making the words the same color as the background.

* Redirect Pages
Redirecting the user to a different or unrelated page, commonly called cloaking, is another black hat technique that is best left avoided. A user searches for “sleeping bags,” clicks on a result that looks promising, but is directed instead to, say, a pornographic site.

* Link farms
Putting relevant links are also effective in SEO, but black hatters abuse the process through link farming or spamdexing. The abusive method involves creating lots of websites that host free links, creating a compilation of interlinked sites. These sites do not provide good quality content since their only purpose is to host links. Linking to and from numerous sites with unrelated content in an attempt to enhance search engine ranking is also considered link farming.

* Page Swapping
In this deceptive technique, a Web page gets indexed and ranked. Once it gets to a desired position, the owner then changes the page entirely. Thus, a user may search “electronic day trading” in a search engine and clicks a result in the SERP. The page he lands on, however, is completely different from the keyword he used in searching and the description seen in the SERP because the owner changed the page after it was indexed earlier.

* Mirror sites or duplicate content
Individuals using this technique copy a significant amount of content from another site—with or without permission—particularly one that is already up in the SERP, and paste it to his site. If the content was duplicated without permission, the person responsible in copying it might get into legal trouble since this method cites a case of plagiarism.

* Spamming in Blogs
Indiscriminately including backlinks to your website to your replies or posts in other’s blogs and forums, whether manually or automatically, can get you banned on that blog or forum. Your posts and replies that accompany your backlink should be relevant, insightful, informative, or helpful.

* Domain Squatting
Just like plagiarism and establishing mirror sites, this one can get the culprit into legal trouble. Basically, the website owner or SEO provider registers a domain with a trademarked word in the hopes of making it on top of an SERP or, more disturbing, to gain profit. A perfect example would be the case of Russell Boyd who registered a website called juliaroberts.com. The site was soon handed over to actress Julia Roberts after the court decided that Boyd “registered and used the domain name in bad faith.”

* Doorway Pages
Doorway pages are landing pages that are designed specifically for search engines. In most cases, they cannot be seen by the user. These pages utilize a redirect script that automatically links the visitor to another page on the website. This practice is deemed highly illegal by Google and major search engines.

Black hat strategies like the ones mentioned above can severely damage or even destroy your credibility even if you have a high rank on the search engine. With the lack of credibility, you won’t be getting much sales, memberships, or referrals.

Use correct organic SEO techniques to maintain credibility, enjoy better website ranking, and acquire good traffic—and possibly sales—while steering away from trouble.

A/B Testing In Google AdWords

There are many of techniques in SEO to boost your popularity and branding, pay per click (PPC) offers easy ways to test and prove different marketing messages. While SEO and social media can have use different testing methods, PPC has the benefit of giving clean, trackable results.

According to Wikipedia, A/B testing is a technique of marketing testing by which a baseline control sample is compared to a variety of single-variable test samples in order to get better response rates. In Google AdWords, the testing process allows you to test the performance of two entirely different versions of an ad. Here’s how it works.

Let’s say you sell android tablet Your ad might look something like this:

Best Android tablet
Check out LG Android Series powered
by Android. Choose your Android Now
www.example.com

After you have created that ad (our control ad), the alternative ad might look like this:

LG Android Phones @ Cheap rates
Check out LG Android Series powered
by Android. Choose your Android Now
www.example.com

As you can see, the ads are very close to being the same, but you want to test if the word “Best” attracts more people than the word “LG.” This test would provide valuable information about your customers’ interests. If more shoppers clicked on the “Best” ad and made a purchase on your website, then you would then delete the “LG” ad and try something else, for example:

Best Android tablet @ cheap rates
Check out LG Android Series powered
by Android. Choose your Android Now
www.example.com

This second test ad would determine if your visitors are more interested in Best instead of LG than try to combine both as mentioned above.

This is a very basic view of A/B testing with Google AdWords. Leaps and bounds in visitor testing can really be made by making changes to your ad’s landing page. These tests can include changes in your ad copy, call-to-action, page color, headers, and many other tweaks. The truth is that website and ad testing is never complete. It is a continuous process for the best click through rate and the highest conversion percentage.

Twitter to Publicly Release its Web Analytics Tool

Twitter, is one of the most winning social networking websites, will soon roll out its own Web Analytics Tool for all twitter users.

With this tool, they can able to understand how much their website content is being shared across the Twitter network and see the traffic stats they receive from Twitter.

Twitter Web Analytic Tool is powered by Back Type, a comment turned social analytic platform acquired by Twitter last July.

At this time, this tool is in beta and it can be used for free. A small group of its partners will be the first to get an access and start to use Twitter Web Analytic this week and in the coming few weeks, Twitter will release it to all website owners.

For those web developers, Twitter has some good news as they will also soon provide Twitter Web Analysis API to let them incorporate Twitter data in their products.

SEO and Positioning Tips- Boost your Ranking

SEO and positioning your website to rank top spots in the search engines need some careful scheduling. Just like setting up a business or going to combat, it needs strategizing for optimal results. Diving straight into the internet without any clear game plan is time-wasting, dangerous and more often than not, a futile attempt to rank any website for maximum targeted traffic. Let’s dwell a little deeper into some useful SEO and positioning tips to get your web pages indexed and ranking faster.

1. SEO and Positioning Tip 1 – Determine Your Objective

What is your objective in optimizing your website? Is it for maximum general traffic or targeted niche traffic? Once again, webmasters are unable to get this part clear. Many think that driving as much traffic as possible to their websites is the way to go. Unfortunately, this is a big pitfall. A web site may attract loads of traffic but yet don’t perform as well as another with little traffic but making more sales. Know what your objective is, to sell more products or to get more people to visit your website. If you are building an interest-based website or hobby website, perhaps getting maximum general traffic is the right solution for you.

2. SEO and Positioning Tip 2 – Plan Your Keywords Right

This is applicable for all websites that intend to tap into free organic traffic. By that, I mean SEO and positioning high in search engines for specific keywords. One clue for you before you compile your keyword list is to understand that search engines rank individual web pages, not websites. The systematic way to do it is to first look at your objective of SEO and positioning. If you are targeting a niche market, for example SEO tools, target the niche keyword SEO tools for your home page, and drill into this main keyword for related keywords such as SEO Elite, effective SEO tools, etc to target for each internal web page.
Don’t make the mistake like many webmasters do in targeting one main keyword for the entire website. The smart approach to SEO and positioning is to target a list of low competition, moderate demand keywords and rank well for them. This would potentially drive more targeted traffic, than to blindly hit at one main keyword.

3. SEO and Positioning Tip 3 – Simple Well-Thought On-page Optimization

Use your keywords in the meta-tags, web page title, sub-headers and web content. Make your web content unique. A keyword density of 3-6% and word count of more than 400 words is ideal for on-page optimization. Create a sitemap page to make search engines spiders love your web pages. This helps in indexing the internal pages fast.

4. SEO and Positioning Tip 4 – Effective Off-page Optimization Techniques

Building link popularity of a website is far more crucial than any other factors for SEO and positioning for top search engine ranking. But pay attention to who your link partners are. Trade links with websites in a similar niche, and high Google PR if possible. Links from authority websites such as educational or government websites, ie domain names with .edu or .gov extensions are valuable. Buying links from link partners is perfectly fine if you can verify the quality of the websites. Search engines nowadays can be quite demanding and look for quality more than quantity of links.

Build My Rank Closed – What Now?

If you have been following this blog for a while, you might have noticed that all the nice affi banners to link building services have disappeared over time. Reason being that I don’t use them anymore, nor do I recommend this kind of services anymore. Why that is the case, I will tell you shortly. But I am still on the mailing list of a few of them and some days ago I received an email from Build My Rank that was interesting to say the least! Granted, BMR has closed the doors temporarily in the past and might open in the future again, but that is not the really interesting bit. Here two quotes from their email:
  • While we are closed we will be 1) rapidly expanding our network footprint
I mean that one is a big ‘OOPS’ and I am sure they didn’t mean to send that out like this! But for those that can read between the lines, it gives a strong hint on what has happened to Build My Rank – they, like a lot of other link building networks, got discovered and de-valued by Google. More to that also later …
  • “Please keep in mind that everyone benefits if we can continue to keep BuildMyRank viable over the long-term.”
Every time I see ‘if’ used in this way, it raises red warning flags with me …
OK, you could now say that is only my personal opinion and interpretation, so I spend the last days asking around and investigating on the interwebs, forums and generally chatting with people in the internet marketing niche. Here my findings regarding rankings, Build My Rank users and also other networks:
  • Some people report that whilst BMR didn’t work since months as good as it used to, their rankings were still stable. These were mostly people that build few, or only a moderate amount of links, to their sites. When these links got devalued / not counted anymore the impact was less because they were not relying solely on them. Meaning they had also natural backlinks and / or the percentage of links build by BMR and other services were lower, hence the impact was also lower as these links disappeared from the algo.
  • Others have seen as massive drop in their rankings, and traffic! These were mostly big sites that relied massively on link building services. They felt the drop painfully because they had an over average amount of links build to their site. As those links were de-counted, it affected their rankings more heavily.
  • General agreement is also that Build My Rank is not the only network that is affected. Others seem to have suffered the same fate.
  • And, perhaps most importantly, I couldn’t find any mention of recent rankings having improved by recent use of Build My Rank!
Conclusion
Google is cracking down massively on link building networks and services. Don’t kid yourself in thinking that there is something like an undetectable, footprint-less network! There are several ways such a network can be detected, from the easiest (Google employee signing up anonymously and detecting it ‘from the inside’) to employing advanced techno stuff and scripts to discover the footprint. Google is one of the biggest techno companies in the world, they basically invented search engines and rankings, do you really think they can’t discover link networks? So, what to do now?
Build My Rank is closed – What door is opening for you?
First of all I suggest having a good long look at your site(s) and ask yourself the most important question:
“Does my site(s) actually deserve(s) to be on the first page of the Google search results?
If the answer is ‘No’, because your website contains mainly of rewritten content that you have found in turn in the top ten sites in Google for your keyword(s) / topic(s) and ads, then I suggest you start right there and improve it Your chances of ending up on the first page on Google are so much better if your site provides really the best answer a searcher could hope to find when typing >keyword< into a Google search box. And, it will then attract natural backlinks from real people that are recommending it as a source of information and / or a great place to buy things from. Oh, and don’t give me the: But nobody will link to a site about >keyword< naturally! Virtually every problem has its dedicated sites and forums that link to resources, if your site is a real resource that helps people interested in that topic.
If your site is good enough, provided you have been honest with yourself, then you can do several things:
  • Add more content.
More, keyword targeted, content that is actually useful to real human readers will attract more traffic and that means more income. Just take the money and time you save by NOT using link building services, outsourcers to write ‘just good enough for link building articles’ for you and use them to improve your own site and not somebody else’s network
  • Try a PPC campaign
If your site is actually selling something real, service or product, you can run a PPC campaign in Google adwords which will show you a couple of things. One is the real amount of traffic and conversion you can expect by being in the top spot in Google and secondly you will learn the Adsense game from the other site of the fence. As an advertiser, not as somebody that runs ads on a website. One word of warning, be careful that you don’t burn money that you don’t have doing this, it is a steep learning curve!
  • Build back links to your own site by guest posting and article writing.
To do this right, concentrate on real readers and traffic first and then on link. Make a short list of the most important sites and blogs in your niche and approach the owners and offer them unique content that is targeted to their audience. Also don’t forget about forums, they can help you to establish yourself as an expert in your niche and give you a lot of inspiration about what to write next. By concentrating on attracting real eye balls to your content and taking the links as a bonus you might shift your inner perspective

BMR Is Closed – End Of The World Is Not Coming

Every morning I have the same routine, I get up have a cup of tea, discuss the world with my daughter Elizabeth and check my emails. Yesterday I get an email about how BMR is closing. So no more links from Build My Rank (I highly recommended them a while ago) , as soon as I read it I knew this was going to cause a storm online.

I remember the days when people had their own small link networks, I once paid $600 for a software to post to my own network of sites (including what would now be web2 sites) and had to sign a NDA to get it.  It was underground and kept quiet and it worked. Then they became better known and rather than building your own you used someone elses. This is essentially what BMR is, they manage the network and you pay for access.

There are a few of these networks, some have people put their own sites in, some buy the domains and build the sites out. Some are $30 a month some are $500 a month. Price doesn’t matter really because:-
Google Are After Link Networks
They have kind dabbled with smacking down affiliates and IM people for a while, but looks like they have worked out how to find link networks for real this time and if the network you are in is famous/notorious/massive and public you can expect it to be slapped soon.
To their credit the guys behind BMR are handling all of it really well and they have said they will do refunds on some stuff and pay affiliates. So I for one would be happy to listen to them on their next project.

Do I Remove All My Links From BMR or Not?
It may be too little to late, but yes I would say that at this point you should remove them. It is gutting to lose all those links you paid for but take a deep breath and do it.

SEO is Dead/I am giving up/I don like In n Out Burger
None of these statements make any sense to me, business is tough. I have been at this 7 years and Google have slapped me silly and taken all my income at least twice.  As a kid I delivered papers and hated it, rain and cold and dark..yukk..Tough its part of the job get on with it.
What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger and It is a learning opportunity
These two phrases drive me nuts but they are right. You will lose some ranking, probably lose some money (if your sites use link networks like BMR a lot) and you will be pissed off. But you do not have a horrible disease (well not from this) Your loved ones are still hiding the remote from you and your kids still think its funny when you fall asleep in front of the TV and snore.

What can you learn from all this? Well in my opinion you should be learning that link diversity is important BUT it is not enough. Having lots of links is good but it is not enough, even if they are good links it will not be enough long term. So what do you have to do?

For the last month at least I have been talking to Rob from Internet Marketing In A Hour a day about what happens when Google get serious about link manipulation and they get annoyed enough to do something about it. We also talk abut social networks, about money (making it and spending it), foreign language sites and all kinds of fun stuff.
We both have similar ideas about how this Google thing is going to roll and today we started putting it down on paper (well Google Docs). We started with a 6 page brain dump document (the long lost/hidden/secret manifesto in sales page speak) and are now breaking it out into areas. We want to share the Why, The What and The How as well as some questions for each of us to answer.

You Have To Be Willing To Break Out
I personally believe we need to undertake a sea change in our thinking, we are all trained by people around us and it is amazingly hard to break that training. You learn to look for certain visitor numbers, certain adsense payouts and you listen to how to build sites and how to build links.

Breaking away from the lessons of years (and a million forums and blog posts ) is hard and I think we are in for a painful year. Google do not love anyone making money online except them and they require that we step up our game. Hopefully myself and Rob will be able to share some ideas on how to do that soon.

Google Will Now Kill You for Over-Optimization

For years there were rumors that if you over-optimized your site that perhaps Google would penalize you. So far, these have only been rumors and never confirmed. However, now Google has officially announced that they are in development of a secret algorithm that will hurt sites that over-optimize themselves on specific keywords.
According to Matt Cutts, from Google:
What about the people optimizing really hard and doing a lot of SEO. We don’t normally pre-announce changes but there is something we are working in the last few months and hope to release it in the next months or few weeks. We are trying to level the playing field a bit. All those people doing, for lack of a better word, over optimization or overly SEO – versus those making great content and great site. We are trying to make GoogleBot smarter, make our relevance better, and we are also looking for those who abuse it, like too many keywords on a page, or exchange way too many links or go well beyond what you normally expect. We have several engineers on my team working on this right now.
What exactly is over-optimization? While there are some theories around the net, Practical Ecommerce Claims that these are the 5 signals that someone is over optimizing:
  • Linking to a page from that same page with optimized anchor text. If the page is www.jillsfakesite.com/flannel-shirts, and in the body copy of that page I link the words “flannel shirts” to the same page the words are on, IE www.jillsfakesite.com/flannel-shirts, that should count as over-optimization.
  • Linking repeatedly from body copy to a handful of key pages with optimized anchor text. If 33 of my 100 pages link to www.jillsfakesite.com from the body copy with the anchor text “Jills Fake Site,” that should count as over-optimization.
  • Changing the “Home” anchor text to your most valuable keyword. Usually the home link is the site’s logo. But in the cases where the home link is textual and has been optimized with the juiciest keyword, that should count as over-optimization.
  • Overly consistent and highly optimized anchor text on backlinks. If 10 of the 100 links to a page contain the same highly optimized anchor text, such as “Jill’s Fake Site, the Fakest Site Selling Flannel Shirts on the Web,” that should count as over-optimization.
  • Generic keyword domain name. They have way too much impact on rankings, and need to be demoted in importance. Now I’m sure it’s difficult to determine which words are generic and which are brands. But Google seems to have cracked that nut at least partially with its related brands results. Surely they must be close to understanding the difference between the non-branded domain littleblackdress.com and the brand whitehouseblackmarket.com.
What is basically being pointed out that is that proper SEO actually levels the playing field between you and everyone else because now you can stand by the quality of your site, not by the search engine’s ability to figure it out. Because, sure, the search engines are getting better at understanding new technologies and “seeing” what is on your Web site – but would you really leave the success of your site and your business in their hands. No, you’re going to do everything in your power to make sure it’s as crawlable and easy to navigate as you can. That’s SEO. It’s also good business.

BIG G will kill you if you over optimize on page factors

Now here's the 5 factors that you must be careful when optimizing...

Linking to a page from that same page with optimized anchor text. If the page is jillsfakesite.c0m/flannel-shirts, and in the body copy of that page I link the words “flannel shirts” to the same page the words are on, IE jillsfakesite.c0m/flannel-shirts, that should count as over-optimization.

Linking repeatedly from body copy to a handful of key pages with optimized anchor text. If 33 of my 100 pages link to jillsfakesite.c0m from the body copy with the anchor text “Jills Fake Site,” that should count as over-optimization.

Changing the “Home” anchor text to your most valuable keyword. Usually the home link is the site’s logo. But in the cases where the home link is textual and has been optimized with the juiciest keyword, that should count as over-optimization.

Overly consistent and highly optimized anchor text on backlinks. If 10 of the 100 links to a page contain the same highly optimized anchor text, such as “Jill’s Fake Site, the Fakest Site Selling Flannel Shirts on the Web,” that should count as over-optimization.

Generic keyword domain name. They have way too much impact on rankings, and need to be demoted in importance. Now I’m sure it’s difficult to determine which words are generic and which are brands. But Google seems to have cracked that nut at least partially with its related brands results. Surely they must be close to understanding the difference between the non-branded domain littleblackdress.c0m and the brand whitehouseblackmarket.c0m.
